The Institute

Being a central institution within the University of Mannheim, the Institute for Enterprise Systems (InES) works on an interdisciplinary basis across faculties. The main purpose of InES is to actively enhance the valuable exchange between science and practice in the field of enterprise systems. Both, the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg (MWK) and the University of Mannheim jointly initiated the founding of the Institute of Enterprise Systems.

Enterprise systems are information systems with specific characteristics: representing the backbone of enterprises' operations, enterprise systems are characterised by a thorough depth combined with a high level of integration and a deep multi-dimensional impact. Enterprise systems are based on standardised product software also called enterprise software. Pre-defined best practices usually set the standard for pre-configurating enterprise software and supplying it in software packages to the applying enterprises.

We regard enterprise systems as socio-technical systems in which information- and communication technologies and human beings or rather organisations interact. In this interaction, enterprise software is considered as a focal technological component of enterprise systems. By optimizing existing and by setting the conditions for new business processes and models, enterprise systems are geared at increasing value added and thus improving business results.

At the Institute for Enterprise Systems, we carry out applied research in the area of enterprise systems. Our goal is defined by three major targets:

  • achieving high-quality results in research by using an interdisciplinary research approach
  • transfering know-how into the practical world with a strong focus on designers as well as users in middle-sized enterprises as well as large corporations
  • providing young scientists with state-of-the-art qualification

InES is offering a platform of interdisciplinary linkage between scientists, students and companies in the context of Enterprise Systems
